ABUJA, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday night condemned the bomb blast in the capital city and ordered the nation's security services to rise to the occasion and arrest this new and dangerous challenge to the country's peace and stability.

The Nigerian leader made the condemnation in a statement issued to reporters in Abuja, noting that there shall be no sacred cows.

"All, no matter how remotely connected to these incidents, must be brought to justice," he added.

"They must be made to pay, No one, and we repeat, no one, can make this nation ungovernable," President Jonathan said.

Two bomb explosions hit Nigerian capital Abuja on Friday evening, with the first hitting the busy "Mammy" market attached to the Abacha Barracks in the Asokoroarea of Abuja and the second one rocking a suburb church.

Police said the first bomb was planted in an area in the "Mammy" market where people were gathering to celebrate the coming of the New Year.

Heavy casualties are feared in the first bomb explosion. While reports said at least 11 people were killed in the explosion, the state-run Nigerian Television Authority gave death toll of 30. It did not give the number of the injured.

But the police at the scene said they could not confirm the figure at this stage.
