20110202 Xinhua TUNIS, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- The recent turmoil in Tunisia has killed 147 people and wounded 510 others, the UN human rights commission chief said Tuesday.
According to Bacre N'Diaye, head of the UN Office of the High Commission on Human Rights, the death toll does not include the 72 prisoners died in prison during the latest events which led to the ouster of former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The death toll is not final and is likely to increase, N'Diaye said at a press conference in the capital Tunis.
Ahmed Friaa, the Tunisian Minister of the Interior, earlier put the death toll at 73.
N'Diaye also put forward a set of urgent recommendations to Tunisian authorities, including the redefinition of relations between the government and the people based on the rule of law, the reform of the security system, the balance among regions and the respect for human rights in the country's process of reconstruction.
