20110202 Xinhua ABIDJAN, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and seven others injured in confrontations between police and protesters on Tuesday in a northeast town in Cote d'Ivoire, witnesses reported.
A resident of the town told Xinhua on telephone that the confrontations in Bondoukou initially happened between members of two student associations -- Cote d'Ivoire's Student Federation (FESCI) and the General Association of Cote d'Ivoire's Students (AGEECI).
The flare triggered a chain reaction with some other people joining in to chase the students from their schools and erecting road blocks in the town.
When security forces intervened to remove the barricades, some people began to attack their barracks, looting and burning down houses of the gendarmes.
Calm was restored in the town by midday.
Cote d'Ivoire is facing a danger of anarchy with two presidents and two government in standoff since the Nov. 28 presidential run- off.
