20110213 presstv UN's Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has once again called for a smooth, orderly and transparent transition of power in Egypt after the resignation of its ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
Ban Ki moon's statement comes on Friday after Mubarak's vice president Omar Suleiman announced the president's step-down from power after 30 years.
“I respect what must have been a difficult decision, taken in the wider interests of the Egyptian people,” the United Nations Information Centre reported the Secretary-General as saying.
Following his resignation, Mubarak transferred power over to the military.
He said, “At this historic moment, I reiterate my call, made as recently as last night, for a transparent, orderly and peaceful transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people and includes free, fair and credible elections leading to the early establishment of civilian rule”.
He continued, “I urge the interim authorities to chart a clear path forward with the participation of all stakeholders.”
He commended the Egyptians for demanding their rights and views in a courageous and peaceful manner, while reiterating the UN's readiness to assist the nation.
Following 18 days of protests against the US-sponsored-Mubarak regime, protesters have said that the revolution is far from over since Egyptians emphasize the importance of transitioning to a civilian government in this critical time period.
