20110225 Xinhua TUNIS, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has deployed its staff at the Ras Jedir border point between Tunisia and Libya, where they have been working with the Tunisian Red Crescent and Tunisian authorities, reported the Tunisian official press agency, TAP on Thursday.
According to UNHCR sources, the majority of people who have been arriving at Ras El Jedir since Wednesday are Tunisians fleeing the violence in Libya, others include Turkish, Moroccan, Egyptian and West African nationals.
UNHCR is busy in conjunction with Tunisian authorities putting up a temporary camp for 10,000 refugees that are expected to arrive at the border point this weekend.
In a communique released on Thursday, the UNHCR praises both Tunisian and Egyptian authorities for keeping their borders open, in spite of the massive influx of people pouring through Ras El Jedir in an effort to escape the violence in Libya.
