JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- A special South African police unit known as the Hawks on Thursday called for an investigation into how Nigerian rebel leader Henry Okah came to be in possession of eight cell phones while in prison in Johannesburg.

Talk Radio 702 in Johannesburg reported that South African correctional services officers raided Okah's cell on Tuesday evening. They reportedly found documents including a map of a courthouse.

Okah is facing trial in South Africa for allegedly organizing two bomb blasts in Nigeria in October 2010, in which 12 people were killed.

The radio station said that South African authorities received a tip-off about supposed terror threats made by Okah from his jail cell.

McIntosh Polela, spokesman for the Hawks, said it was extremely concerning that these items were found in his cell.

"We are hoping that the Department of Correctional Services will do an investigation to find out how a guy obtained eight cell hones in a cell, and other items that shouldn't have been there," he said.
