20110203 Xinhua ABUJA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Atahiru Jega has said the commission had mapped out a strategy to ensure credible elections in April.
Jega gave the assurance at the opening of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) 10th Delegates Conference on Tuesday in Abuja, adding that INEC will work with the strategy to get it right.
"We want to ensure that INEC is impartial and non-partial so that everybody does the right thing because people are beginning to have confidence in the commission," the chairman said.
The huge turnout of Nigerians during voter registration in spite of the challenges proved that the people believe in INEC and want their votes to count, the electoral chief added.
Jega said it is time to reform the nation's policy to ensure fair and credible election as well as elect responsible leaders.
He stressed the need for labor to work with the government to meet the aspiration of the people as well as strengthen governance in the country.
The chairman urged the NLC to live up to the expectations of the people by continuing to defend their rights.
