Abuja — The statistics are grim and disheartening. Between 1955 and 2004 the 16 West African states of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), had experienced 44 successful military coups, 43 often-bloody failed coups, at least 82 coup plots, seven civil wars, and many other forms of political conflicts. These conflicts have adversely crippled development in affected countries, causing suffering among the peoples of the sub-region.
