TUNIS, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Following a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, the country's interim government recommended maintaining the election date for the country's constituent assembly on July 24, the state-run press agency TAP reported.

The government also pledged to provide the country's independent electoral body with all necessary means to ensure that elections are held on July 24.

On Sunday, the head of the country's independent electoral body, suggested delaying the elections to October 16, citing technical reasons. Only a few of the political parties running for the elections, support the idea of postponing the elections.

The majority of the country's main parties are in favor of holding elections on the initial date of July 24. Since the ousting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on January 14, the North African country has been struggling to restore security and to prop up its battered economy.

Observers note that maintaining the initial elections date, will restore the credibility of the government and strengthen the country's stability and security.
