20110611 Xinhua ADDIS ABABA, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Jean Ping participated as invitee in the third meeting of the International Contact Group (ICG) on Libya held in Abu-Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates, the pan-African bloc said here on Friday.
On the margins of the ICG meeting held on Thursday, the AUC chief had a series of consultations with several participants, including, Foreign Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu, Foreign Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd, British Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Alistair Burt and a delegation from Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) including Ahmed Jibril and Abdel Rahman Shalgam, a statement said.
These meetings were a good opportunity for in-depth exchange of views on ways to reach early cessation of hostilities between the Libyan parties.
In this context, the AUC chief underscored the importance of creating the conditions for a broad-based, all-inclusive and consensual dialogue culminating in a political dispensation that fulfils the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people to democracy, justice and rule of law, the statement said.
The chairperson assured his interlocutors that the African Union (AU) would spare no effort in underscoring the need for a political solution in Libya as well as a long term vision based on the necessity to find sustainable solutions to the crisis.
These interlocutors and a number of delegations who attended the third meeting of the International Contact Group on Libya, acknowledged in their statements during the general debate, the important role the AU has played, and continues to play, in the search for a political solution to the Libyan crisis.
They agreed to continue working closely together within the framework of the partnership and as part of the international efforts for a political resolution of the crisis in Libya, the statement added.
During the meeting of the ICG, the AUC chief appealed to members of the group to lend full support to the efforts of the AU and its high-level ad hoc committee, whose role is formally recognized by the UN Security Council in its resolution 1973 (2011) .
"The AU shall be unflinching in its resolve since its actions in Libya are solely guided by the objective consideration of the interest of the Libyan people as well as the legitimate long term security and stability concerns of countries in the region," said the AUC chair.
