20110612 xinhua KHARTOUM, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Special Envoy on African Affairs Liu Guijin on Saturday urged north and south Sudan to adhere to the peace option, commit themselves to calmness, exercise self-restraint and adopt the principle of dialogue to resolve the outstanding issues between them.
Liu on Saturday held talks with Sudanese President Omar al- Bashir in Khartoum, which reviewed the peace process in Sudan, the relationship between north and south Sudan and the Darfur issue.
"I hope the two sides would adhere to the peace option, commit themselves to calmness, exercise self-restraint and find peaceful solutions to the outstanding issues through dialogue and on the bases of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)," said Liu in a statement on Saturday.
"China is ready to exert joint efforts with Sudan to find solutions to the outstanding issues for sustainable peace in Sudan and for creating stability in the region in the long-run," he added.
He reiterated China's support for the political process in Darfur, expressing hope that the Sudanese government and the armed opposition in Darfur would reach a peace agreement as soon as possible.
The Chinese envoy said he has received assurances from the Sudanese leadership on commitment to the peace option and implementation of the CPA.
"The Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has expressed gratitude for China's supportive stance to Sudan, reiterated commitment to the peace option and implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and affirmed that the tension in Abyei area was temporary," said Liu.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese government said Saturday that al-Bashir and Chairman of Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) Salva Kiir Mayardit will meet in Addis Ababa on Sunday to discuss the situation in Abyei and South Kordofan State, as well as the future relationship between north and south Sudan.
The north and south Sudan see mounting tension in their relationship in the wake of disputes over the oil-rich area of Abyei, taken control by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on May 21, and recent clashes in the South Kordofan area.
