20110620 Xinhua PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian police in oil rich Rivers State on Monday announced the rescue of the five youth corps members abducted in the state 12 days ago.
Unknown gunmen kidnapped the four female and one male corps members at Omerelu in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state where they had gone for community service.
State commissioner of police Suleiman Abba told reporters in Port Harcourt, the state capital that the corps members were rescued in a forest at Omerelu around 8 p.m. local time on Sunday.
He said one Sanga Prince was arrested in connection with the kidnap, while the other suspects fled.
The commissioner said the corps members had been handed over to Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen Maharazu Tsiga in good health.
Abduction is common in Nigeria. Over 300 foreigners have been seized in the Niger Delta since 2006. Almost all have been released unharmed after paying a ransom.
