Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi has accused NATO of murder, vowing to retaliate for the killing of civilians during air raids by the Western military alliance.

“You said, 'we hit our targets with precision', you murderers,” Gaddafi said in the message broadcast on Libyan television late Wednesday, Reuters reported.

"One day we will respond to you likewise, and your homes will be legitimate targets,"

Gaddafi paid homage to his comrade Khuwildi Hemidi who lost several members of his family in a NATO airstrike on his residence on Monday.

The Libyan ruler vowed to continue the battle until the West is "wiped out."

He said no agreement can be reached over the crisis in Libya after their children and grandchildren were killed in air attacks.

Gaddafi's remarks come after Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini called for an immediate stop to hostilities in Libya. He said the need of a ceasefire has become more pressing.

The Chairman of the African Union (AU) Jean Ping said the deadlock in Libya could increase the possibility of dividing the country in half. He added that the current stalemate will push the West to support the AU plan.

Ping warned of a Somalia-style conflict in Libya. In Somalia warlords and militants used the power vacuum to their benefit.

The AU plan proposes an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of a transition period but fails to clarify Gaddafi's role in the future of Libya.

Libyan revolutionaries have rejected the AU roadmap, demanding Gaddafi's departure.
