20110628 xinhua ALGIERS, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Algeria security services managed foiling an attempt to smuggle 67 kg drugs on the border with Morocco.
A statement issued by Algerian National Gendarmerie on Monday specified that the operation occurred in the early morning of Monday, as traffickers who managed to run away attempted to enter narcotics to Algeria on board of donkeys.
Meanwhile, general director of the National Office for Fighting Drugs and Addiction Abdelmalek Sayeh warned of the exacerbation of drug consumption in the majority of cities and villages of Algeria. He further revealed that security services had seized 23.5 tons of drugs since the beginning of the year.
Sayeh said Algeria counts 302 thousand drug addicts, including cannabis which is the largest drug substance consumed by people aged between 12 and 35.
The increasing quantity of seized drugs is due to the fact that Algeria is a passage of drugs to Europe and the Middle East, the official said.
