20110929 Reuters ABUJA (Reuters) - An email, saying it was sent by a Nigerian militant group based in the oil-producing Niger Delta, said on Wednesday it would place bombs in the capital Abuja during Independence Day celebrations on October 1.
The statement sent to media said the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), a group which claimed responsibility for a bomb attack in Abuja last October 1, would place explosives near planned celebrations at Eagle Square.
Several false threats purporting to be from MEND have been sent in the past and the group has regularly changed its email address. Many of its members took up an amnesty in 2009.
