Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has vowed to continue the fight against al-Shabab fighters to restore peace and stability in the famine-stricken country, Press TVreports.

“The Somali national army has improved the state of security in the capital Mogadishu and offensive is also ongoing in other regions of Somalia,” Sheikh Ahmed said in a Wednesday address to Somali troops that arrived in Mogadishu from Uganda, where they were undergoing military training.

The comments came as Sheikh Ahmed held a meeting with Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Wednesday.

The trio discussed Somalia's security situation and the latest Kenyan incursion into Somali territories.

Tension remains high in Somalia especially in southern parts of the country where Kenyan troops have launched a major offensive against the al-Shabab fighters. Kenya accuses the al-Shabab group of being behind a series of kidnappings of foreign nationals on Kenyan soil.

On Tuesday, al-Shabab Spokesman Ali Mohamud Rageh warned against the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia, asking Nairobi to withdraw its solders from the country.

Strategically located in the horn of Africa, Somalia has generated the highest number of internally displaced people on the continent, fleeing escalating violence. Now drought is claiming the lives of thousands of Somalis, mainly children and the aged.
