20111212 Press TV A Kenyan security officer has been killed and several others have been injured in two separate bomb attacks in northeast Kenya, Press TV reports.
The first bomb explosion took place in the outskirt of the town of Mandera on the Kenya-Somalia border on Sunday.
“Administration police officers were attacked in Bula Hawo, one died on spot while several others were wounded,” said Sheikh Aden, an elder in Bulla Hawo.
“Those wounded, including senior officers were hurriedly taken to Mandera's Hospital where they are receiving treatment,” he added.
The second bomb blast occurred when a military convoy traveling from the town of Wajir to the border town of El-Wak hit a landmine.
Kenya's military spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir told Press TV that a military vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED) in Wajir.
“The vehicle was heading to El-Wak. A mobile phone has been used to detonate the explosive. Two soldiers were slightly injured not nine as reported,” he said.
Somalia's al-Shabab fighters have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks.
