20111212 Press TV UN Secretary General has arrived in Somalia's capital to hold talks with senior officials over a stabilization process for the war-ravaged African nation, Press TV reports.
Ban Ki-moon arrived in Mogadishu on Friday morning, and was escorted in a bullet-proof car to the presidential palace, or Villa Somalia, under heavy security measures.
The trip comes as no public announcement had been made of Ban's visit amid fears of a possible militant attack on him.
Ban's visit marks the first in years by the UN's chief to a city known for a seemingly perpetual state of war.
Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
Strategically located in the Horn of Africa, Somalia remains one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally-displaced people in the world.
