Egyptian protesters have once again poured onto the streets in the capital Cairo, demanding an end to the rule of the military junta and persecution of its members, Press TV reports.

The demonstrations took place in the city's Abbasiyah district on Monday against the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), a Press TV correspondent reported.

The SCAF took power following the popular revolution that toppled the former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak in February. It has, however, so far refused to live up to its promise of handing over the power to a civilian government.

Thousands of Egyptian protesters have been rallying in the capital's iconic Tahrir Square -- a focal point for popular protests -- over the recent months to call on the Council to immediately stage the power transfer.

They also accuse the military rulers of using excessive force against the protesters, citing the deaths of more than 100 people since the military took power as well as the recent instances of brutality exercised by Army troops against protesters, including women.

The violence has prompted some activists to consider suing the ruling generals in local courts or having them tried by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands.

Egypt's Revolution Youth Movement, which played a leading role in the popular uprising that ended Mubarak's rule, has condemned the Army's crackdown as an attempt to "protect the previous regime."
