20120218 AFP Police briefly detained Senegalese opposition presidential candidate Cheikh Bamba Dieye on Friday as he tried to join a protest that had been banned by the authorities, an AFP journalist witnessed.
While his party reported he had been arrested, police denied this and shortly after being taken away by police from the protest, Dieye returned to party headquarters.
Cheikh Bamba Dieye "was freed earlier. He is at party headquarters," his party's spokeswoman Awa Marone said.
Police commissioner Harona Sy told local radio: "It is false. Cheikh Bamba Dieye is not under arrest and was never under arrest."
